“Criminal Code” is partially based on a true story. The series is strongly inspired by the Ciudad del Este heist which occurred in 2017 in Paraguay, with the narration relying on real events to construct a fictional plot.
As a result, the story we see unfolding on screen remains riddled with fictional details, characters, and events, while still having a clear origin in real-life crime.
April 24, 2017, thieves armed with weapons and explosives committed a hold-up on Prosegur, a private security company, and stole approximately $11.7 million.
The criminals allegedly blew up the facade of the building using explosives, engaged in an altercation with the police using firearms, and took several hostages.
DNA Forensics led the ensuing investigation, collecting 457 pieces of evidence and 580 samples, making it the DNA Forensics Lab’s largest case.
This case, often nicknamed the “theft of the century”, remains to this day the largest theft ever committed in Brazil and has been recognized as the DNA dragnet of the year 2020.
