⇒ The Gilded Age Season 2 Ending Explained! What happened to the Duke?
Over time, Ms. Russell realized that it was better for her to sit on the board of directors of the Met than to have a box at the Academy.
For Ms. Astor, it’s about taking pride in the Academy’s success, maintaining “old money” status, and maintaining the boundary between it and the “new money.” For Ms. Russell, it’s about showing Ms. Astor and people like her that they are becoming redundant.
At the end of Season 2 of The Gilded Age, when the Duke of Buckingham arrives in New York, everyone tries to keep him to themselves. The presence of a member of the royal family in their camp would be of immense service to them. The Duke is introduced into the scene by Turner. He is then stolen by Mrs. Russell, then Mrs. Astor intervenes and pulls the Duke back to his camp.
At the end of Season 2 of The Gilded Age, the situation becomes even more chaotic when contradictory news regarding the Duke is published in the newspapers. Some newspapers claim the Duke will visit the Met, while others say he will go to the Academy.
The last time they met, Mrs. Russell noticed the Duke’s interest in Gladys. Mrs. Russell had already been looking for a good match for her daughter, and what better than a duke? She therefore offers the Duke Gladys in exchange for her presence at the Met on the evening of the opera.
However, it is notable that she did not tell her husband about this, as he seems baffled by how she managed to win the Duke over to her cause when it seemed quite impossible. He knows how transactions are made as a businessman, but he cannot imagine what his wife had to exchange to obtain the duke’s favor.
At the end of Season 2 of The Gilded Age, the scene is likely to be eventful when he understands that she has exchanged his daughter’s well-loved. On the night of the opera, it turns out that the audience believes Mrs. Russell.
At the end of Season 2 of The Gilded Age, even without the Duke, the Met is packed, while the Academy only welcomes a crowd sparse, which diminishes as people realize they have made the wrong decision. To seal the deal with Ms. Russell, the Duke shows up at the Met, and Ms. Russell is confirmed to be the big winner in the opera wars.
